About JM Leathercraft
My name is James, and I'm the owner of JM Leathercraft based out of Toronto, Ontario. I'm a passionate woodworker & web-developer, but ever since I started working with leather I've been on the best and most intense journey of my life.
The reason I started on this path is purely accidental, but I couldn't be more grateful to have found the craft that has motivated me to spend so much more time learning, focusing, and progressing my skills than anything else has before. Starting earlier this year, in 2019, I watched a Youtube video of a blacksmith I follow making a leather wallet for the first time after being inspired by a friend. I more or less copied his design, bought a starter kit on Amazon, and then picked up some faux-leather scraps at a fabric store and got to work.
It wasn't long before my roommates started to ask to actually BUY my wallets, and I wasn't sure if it was because they wanted to support me, but I started to feel that if I could work this hard at something and I was already getting quite positive feedback then maybe I could try to take it into the direction of more than just a hobby.
Through lots of trial and error such as discovering that I didn't have 'real' vegetable tanned leather and where to get it, learning the correct methods and practices from other leathercrafters online and at shops, and finding out what worked or didn't and beginning to refine my workflows, I have been able to hone my skills and get to a place where I feel confident that my work will hold up on the handmade market.
I'm proud to have come up with all of my designs out of a desire to give people something that can't simply be downloaded as a template or bought in a kit, and am excited to offer my own collection of wallets to you here. I still have a lot to learn over time, and I look forward to sharing my journey with all of you in the community or simply looking for something locally crafted.
Thank you all,
